This volcano next to the lake is a guarantee for beautiful views. You can have walks around the lake, to the streams and waterfalls nearby or use it as a basecamp before climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai. These algae can give the lake a red-orange color. High evaporation happens here that leaves the high level of sodium carbonate decahydrate and trona sodium sesquicarbonate dehydrate. Lake Natron in Tanzania is extremely alkaline with pH levels as high as 10.5 and temperatures reaching up to 60 C. The flamingos feed themselves with cyanobacteria, a kind of algae that lives in the water. In low rain seasons the water PH levels have reached 10.5 making the lake waters caustic to those animals not used to it. On the other hand, this inhospitality creates a means of defense for certain species, as a matter of fact, the caustic ground acts as a barrier keeping predators away. It is surprising there are life forms that can get their food and breed here. Three quarter of the world population is in East-Africa, and the biggest part of that lives in Natron. This place is wild and inhospitable, the pH of water is so high it makes it as corrosive as ammonia. The lake is known for its huge population of Lesser Flamingos. Not surprisingly, there are only a few creatures that can survive in this lake, among which flamingos. High levels of evaporation have left behind natron (sodium carbonate decahydrate) and trona (sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate). Next to that, the lake contains a high level of natron, which makes the pH level of the water go very high (pH of 10.5, for comparison ammonia has a pH-level of 11.6). The water’s alkalinity comes from the sodium carbonate and other minerals that flow into the lake from the surrounding hills.
#Ph of lake natron skin#
The alkaline water in Lake Natron has a pH as high as 10.5 and is so caustic it can burn the skin and eyes of animals that aren’t adapted to it. The only way the water disappears is through evaporation. This has allowed the lake to concentrate into a caustic alkaline brine.

It is a salt lake, water only flows in but doesn't flow out.

It is located next to Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano.
